'The nerves won't go away': Griff can't get over stage fright – Music News
Griff still suffers from terrible stage fright.
The 23-year-old singer has supported stars such as Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift in recent years and admits the nerves of performing in front of a sold-out crowd never go away.
“I think what I've learned is that the tension never goes away, you get sick to your stomach every time,” Griff told the BBC.
“But there's something uniquely uplifting about having people singing[your words]back to you.
“Sometimes, without us asking, the whole stadium will start lighting up. That's when you realize, wow, we really have an audience.”
Griff released his debut album, Vertigo, earlier this month, which appears to be about breakups and he says he found it difficult to tackle the subject of relationship grief.
She said: “Yes, it may have happened, but I think it's a natural thing to go through in your early twenties.”
“It's probably a lot harder than you think.
“Disappointment and rejection are much harder to put into words than you might think.”
Griff opened for Taylor Swift at Wembley Stadium last month for her Eraser tour, and said he was impressed by the “surprisingly calm” atmosphere backstage at such a huge concert.
“What's really nice,” she said, “is that every single person is aware that they are part of history. There's a lot of gratitude for being part of history. I think it's a really beautiful atmosphere.”
The “Black Hole” singer admits it would be “exciting” to have the opportunity to headline his own stadium show in the future.
“The funny thing is, as time has gone by since I've been in this job, my goals for success have continued to change,” Griff explained.
“My ultimate goal is to write songs that will live on after I'm gone, but if that translates to playing in stadiums, that's super exciting.”
