Zayn's “Room Under the Stairs” topped this week's new song poll.
Music fans voted in a poll released Friday (May 17) on Billboard to choose the star's latest album as their favorite new music release of the past week.
The former One Direction singer's latest studio album received over 47% of votes, just 3% ahead of Billie Eilish's Hit Me Hard and Soft. In a week full of fresh pop, country and hip-hop songs, voters preferred Room Under the・I chose Stairs.
Featuring production from Dave Cobb, Room Under the Stairs is Zayn's fourth solo album and follows 2021's Nobody Is Listening. From pop to country and her transition to R&B, which mixes her rock influences, the singer's roots-ish new set is led by the single “What I Am.”
“We don't have a name for the genre yet,” Zayn said in a recent interview with Zach Sun. “That's just me,” he pointed out.
“There's no concrete strategic plan behind it, it's just an expression. Whatever came out came out,” he added.
Speaking to Nylon about today's sound, Zayn said: “People are looking for a little more depth from the lyrics. On the Top 40 charts, it feels like a lot of mainstream music is a little bit full of wishful thinking. The songs are on fire. What I'm Saying You know, it's catchy. They're playing it on the radio, they're doing their job, but people want something more.”
Following Room Under the Stairs in this week's poll is Billie Eilish's new album Hit Me Hard and Soft, which received just over 44% of the vote, followed by Saweetie's NANi and Luke Combs' Ain't No Love in Oklahoma. A Boogie wit da Parker is better off alone.
