Taylor Swift tweeted on social media on Sunday that “The Tortured Poets Department'' debuted with 2.61 million units, making it the highest-selling album by Adele in 2015 with 250,000 units. reacted to the news.
“My mind is blown,” Swift wrote on Instagram under a merry-go-round of Polaroid photos from the recording session. “I am completely impressed by the love you have shown for this album.”
Billboard reported Sunday that “Torchard Poets” debuted at No. 1, making it the 14th album of Swift's career to hit No. 1 on the chart, tied with Jay-Z for a solo artist. It became the highest number one in history.
The album, released on April 19, sold in the United States at 2.61 million equivalent album units, of which 859,000 were vinyl equivalent sales. This record reached the previous record of total album sales of 1.9 million copies, far surpassing Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter (2nd place) with 228,000 copies, and secured the position as the best-selling album of 2024.
“Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life,” Swift continued. “I feel completely overwhelmed.”
Swift will return to performing on the Elas Tour next month, with her first show set to take place in Paris on May 9th. Singer-songwriter Swift wrote in her post that that day “can't come soon enough.”
Last week, Tortured Poets became the most streamed album of the week on Spotify, surpassing 1 billion streams just five days after its release. On the day of its release, it became the first album in Spotify history to reach over 300 million streams in a single day. Swift also holds the record for the most streamed artist in a single day, breaking the previous record set in 1989 (Taylor's Version) on October 27th.
