Radio Academy ARIAS 2024, hosted by Alice Levine and Romesh Ranganathan, took place tonight at the Royal Drury Lane Theater in London. Best Music Entertainment, Best New Podcast, The Comedy Award, Best Local Radio Show, Network of the Year, and the Pioneer Award, a special award presented by the Radio Academy Board of Directors. The winners of 27 awards were announced.
Following another landmark year for the audio and radio industry, ARIAS celebrates some of the most inspiring achievements of UK individuals, networks and broadcasters over the past 12 months. Created by the Radio Academy, a charity dedicated to supporting people in audio and radio, ARIAS is an inspiring evening dedicated to shining a light on audio's thriving community.
This year's attendees include Greg James, Vic Hope, Marvin Humes, Trevor Nelson, Jane Garvey and Fai Glover, Jamie Lane, Nish Kumar, Rick Edwards, Ken Bruce, and Nicole Apple. Tong, Lauren Laverne, and others. Former Radio Academy 30 Under 30 KISS FM's Sam Darastan also hosted a backstage interview with the winner.
Rugby league legend Rob Barrow MBE has won two gold awards: Best New Podcast and Creative Innovation. He also won a Silver Award in the Best New Presenter category for his podcast Seven: Rob Burrow. Produced by BBC Radio Leeds, this unique podcast is hosted by Rob alongside his wife Lindsay. Because he has motor neuron disease, he uses a gaze measuring device to ask various sports greats his seven questions.
Rob Barrow gave a speech using an eye-tracking device and said: “It's a great result. The last big trophy I lifted wasn't this big, but it's certainly as special as this one. This is the first.'' It's a trophy,'' he said, showing off his individuality to the audience. I think people like me with motor neuron disease are given this opportunity. Thank you for having the courage to hand me the microphone and trusting me not to say anything inappropriate. I hope you all have a fun night and don't get too drunk afterwards. party…”
Radio pioneer Annie Nightingale MBE has been posthumously awarded the Pioneer Award for her significant contribution to the broadcasting industry and for paving the way for talented women and non-binary people in the electronic music scene. . Joining BBC 6 Music's Lauren Laverne and BBC Radio 1's Martha, Annie's daughter Lucy also took to the stage to thank her ARIAS for supporting the Annie Nightingale Scholarship Program and continuing her legacy. I gave an emotional speech about how grateful I was. Their speeches were accompanied by clips from Annie's documentary and photos of her over the years.
The radio industry has also come together to pay tribute to the late Steve Wright. Marty Perrow, lead singer of Scottish rock band Wet Wet Wet, gave a special musical performance of his song “Wichita Lineman” on stage. This song was regularly performed by Steve on BBC Radio 2's Sunday Love Songs program and was a personal favorite of his. Tribute video featuring familiar names including Sarah Cox, Sarah Millican, Vernon Kaye, Craig David, Jon Culshaw, Gary Davies, Greg James, Ken Bruce, Tony Blackburn and Chris Moyles was played to the audience, followed by loud applause. Tears from the audience.
