Normani said she “wasn't scared” when she made her film debut in Freaky Tales.
The show sees the Motivation singer take on the role of Entis alongside Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn and Jay Ellis, and tells four interconnected stories set at real locations and historical events that took place in 1987 in Oakland, California.
Although the former Fifth Harmony star was new to acting, she wasn't too nervous because she was ready to explore a new creative outlet.
“For me, it was a very refreshing experience, especially after dedicating so much time and heart to music for so long,” she told ELLE. “I felt like I could be creative in a different way. I wasn't afraid to start. Of course, I was a little nervous because it was a new environment for me, but that's what I liked most about it. I got to start from scratch, like a blank slate, a blank canvas.”
Normani spent a lot of time working with Dominique Thorne, best known for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and learned a lot from her co-star.
“I never stop being a student, so I asked her questions and she told me I was doing well and encouraged me to just be there,” the 28-year-old said.
Describing the experience as “really awesome” overall, the singer added: “It all felt so fast and slow all at once. I was curious to see how they would put all the different pieces together, and they did an amazing job.”
“Freaky Tales,” directed by “Captain Marvel” creators Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
The release date has not yet been decided.
