NewJeans releases Powerpuff Girls-themed music video for “Right Now”

Sugar, spice and all things nice

The record was released as the B-side to the pop group's next single, “Supernatural,” both of which were recorded in Japanese.

Sweetness, spice, and everything nice is packed into the vibrant music video for powerhouse girl group New Jeans' latest release, “Right Now.” The record comes as a precursor to their upcoming single and mini-album, “Supernatural,” in which the five-piece perform in Japanese.

Directed by Youngeum Lee and collaborating with Murakami Takashi, the video sees New Jeans and its animated characters mixing ingredients to create the perfect concoction to heal Hani's broken heart. At the start of the video, the singer takes the courageous first step by asking her crush to go to the movies, but when she receives only flower emojis in response, the group embarks on a joint mission to decipher what the cluster of colors means.

“Your chance is here right now,” Nu Jeans warn in the song's second verse, a reminder of the importance of time when it comes to love. At the end of the video, when Hanni's crush double texts her to explain that the flower message was a coincidence, the scene ends with the terrifying three dots appearing to indicate the other person is still typing. The cliffhanger ending sets up possibilities for Supernatural, which hits theaters June 21.

Since their debut in 2022, New Jeans has been expanding their musical palette with each new music release. Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2023 about their EP “Get Up,” which also features famous icons from The Powerpuff Girls, Hanni said, “All of our new songs are…fresh. Compared to our previous releases, this new mini-album definitely offers more diversity, not just in the genre of music and dance style, but in what we're trying to represent and show you guys.”

She added: “I think we're venturing into musical territory that hasn't really been experimented with or attempted before.”
