Lily Allen found it easier to write music when she was on cocaine.
The 39-year-old “Smile” singer has been sober for almost five years since quitting Class A drugs and booze in 2019, but now admits he found the drugs effective in letting him loose while writing songs.
She told the Observer: “Drugs and alcohol were very effective at drowning out the voice of my inner critic.”
“Cocaine makes you think all your ideas are great and need to be shared.”
Lily also shared that she is working on new music, saying:
100 of them!”
However, a profile of her in The Observer said she “doesn't feel like she's good at acting” and that she's decided to “take some time off that side of her career” to continue pursuing acting.
She will star in Hedda Gabler in Bath next summer and before then has been spending time with her daughters Ethel, 12, and Marnie, 11, whom she has with ex-husband Sam Cooper, 46.
But Lily, who has been married to Stranger Things actor David Harbour, 49, since 2020, added that she misses performing live. “I really miss that high.
“I miss the rush of being on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.
“I know I’ll never go through that again, and there’s a sadness that comes with it.
“But I'm calm. I no longer have those long periods of really bad, despairing times.”
Lily's turbulent life has included the stillbirth of her son George in 2010, her divorce from Sam Cooper and a stalking incident in 2015 when an obsessive follower of hers found himself in her bedroom.
