John Mayer responded to speculation about the nature of his friendship with Andy Cohen.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week, the talk show host was asked about his close friendship with the musician. In response, he said the two loved each other and were “very affectionate” but “absolutely not” in a romantic relationship.
Days after Cohen's interview was published, the Your Body Is a Wonderland singer wrote to the outlet to set the record straight.
“I read your interview with Andy Cohen and was intrigued by your question about our friendship,” he began. “Mayer's friendship has been the subject of intense speculation, with people seemingly questioning whether a straight rock star could form a close platonic relationship with a gay TV personality.'' I insisted.
Mayer explained that there is a “long and storied history” of musicians “befriending gay icons and artists.”
“Secondly, to suggest that people are skeptical of friendships like mine and Andy's is because of the public's ability to accept and appreciate diversity in all aspects of culture, whether in art or real life.” “I think it would undermine it,” he continued. “I'd like to think they're sophisticated enough to understand a relationship like ours without thinking there must be a sexual element to it.
