Three adults and two children were taken to hospital in stable condition, authorities said, and the incident remains under investigation.

Every year, thousands of Americans are injured by chemicals commonly used to disinfect swimming pools.

According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 13,508 people, most of them children, visited emergency departments with injuries caused by pool chemicals between 2015 and 2017. Most of the injuries occurred at home, and two-thirds occurred during the summer swimming season, the CDC said.

In recent years, people have suffered serious injuries from exposure to chlorine.

In 2023, an excess of chlorine was poured into a lazy river in Houston, sending 12 people, including several children, to the hospital. Hazmat crews were dispatched to clean up the contaminated area after the accidental spill.
