Eurovision chiefs have defended their decision to ban Joost Klein from last weekend's contest.
The 26-year-old singer was due to represent the Netherlands at the 2024 competition, but was removed hours before the start of the show after Swedish police confirmed they were investigating the complaint.
Joost's sudden removal sparked a backlash from some fans, but the Eurovision Broadcasting Union (EBU) insists it was right to suspend the singer.
A spokesperson said on Tuesday: “The version of events published in some public comments and on social media is not consistent with statements shared by staff and witnesses with us and the Swedish Police.”
They continued: “Joost's actions were in clear violation of the contest's rules, which are designed to ensure a safe working environment for all staff and protect the production.
“We do not prejudge the legal process, but given the circumstances that have occurred and the fact that the police case will soon be handed over to the public prosecutor's office, it is not appropriate for Joost to take part in the grand final. It wouldn't have happened.”
Previous reports had only said that the singer was involved in a backstage “incident” after the semi-finals of the competition, which was held in Malmö, Sweden, and aired last Thursday, May 9.
The EBU added: “We have a zero-tolerance policy against inappropriate behavior at our events and will always take necessary action against threats to staff, regardless of their origin.” Ta.
