Latin Music Appreciation Month
May 2024 was designated “Latin Music Appreciation Month” in the United States this week, following a bipartisan resolution introduced by Senators Ben Ray Luján (D-Mich.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). The effort was led by award-winning producer Emilio Estefan, People en Español, and political strategist and organizer Natalie Arriola Maurice, who traveled to Washington, D.C., last December to meet with Senator Luján.
“As one of the few Hispanics in the United States Senate, I am honored to introduce this resolution recognizing the achievements of Hispanics and Latinos in music and culture,” Luján said, according to People en Español. “The impact of Hispanic and Latino artists in the United States and around the world is immeasurable and worth celebrating, from driving cultural trends to achieving commercial success.”
Estefan has always been focused on uplifting Latin music and culture since he began his career in the '70s. “The recognition of Latin Music Month is an important moment in highlighting the true story of our music, which incorporates diverse styles from every corner of the world,” he said. “These sounds have influenced many generations and continue to inspire new ones.”
Fayed sets up foundation
Earlier this week, Fayed shared a new Instagram profile on his Story called “Fundación GOOD KIDZ,” hinting at the beginning of his own foundation. Gaining over 25,000 followers in its first week and following only Colombian artists, the foundation shared its first post, showcasing one of its first initiatives: “This young forest, which we planted last weekend in collaboration with @CasaMadreRaiz, is the start of many projects to come. Join us in promoting culture, nature and well-being,” the caption read.
Camilo introduces the creative space
Camilo invited Billboard into his creative space, which he calls “Taller Creativo.” Camilo's adopted Miami home is where he produced his latest studio album, “Cuatro,” a set that experimented with salsa music, bossa nova, and other genres. The industrial building, decorated with instruments and a bohemian aesthetic, is also where he shot 12 music videos, including “Una Viva Pasada,” featuring Karin Leon and directed by his wife, Evarna Montaner. During the event, Camilo also performed acoustic versions of new songs.
Carlos Vives named POTY
Carlos Vives, 18-time Latin Grammy winner, two-time Grammy winner, and Billboard Latin Music Awards Hall of Fame inductee, has been named the Latin Recording Academy's Person of the Year for 2024. “It still surprises me,” the Colombian artist said in an exclusive interview with Billboard Español. “It's like the Academy's final message, because 32 years ago, I chose my path in life.” [that was unconventional]There was only one way to be successful and commercial. The other way, which was about culture and identity, didn't work. [they would say]Vives will be honored at the 25th anniversary Latin Grammy Awards gala in Miami in November.
