Fill this out: You're probably already planning to see Jay Gonzalez and Tom Heil's new duo Irreparable Disaster at the Flickr Theater & Bar on Saturday, April 20th, but here's an additional note. there is. Triplicate, the Athens band formerly known as Convince the Kid, will also be celebrating the release of their new EP “Falling Off” that night. The record is scheduled to be released the day before. The four-song release is another entry point into what I call the new big pop sound happening in Athens. This one has strong shades of Imagine Dragons, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Zane. It's not exactly a 1:1 comparison, but it's all in the same big tent. It took me a few listens to each one before I liked them, but I ended up enjoying the third song, “Killer,” a little more than the others. The watery guitar and calm Gene Loves Jezebel-like vocals go well together. Bad Staples is also scheduled for tonight. Find the EP on Spotify. For more information, visit facebook.com/convincethekid.

Naked Lunch: Michael Potter (Null Zone) returns to the archives to deliver a set of Electric Nature songs recorded circa 2009-2010. It's titled “Plastic Mind” and is eight tracks long. He's not 100% sure if knowing that he recorded all of this on an old Dell laptop using an earbud mic had any effect on my hearing, but it probably did. . Either way, this collection proves once again that Potter is one of the most creative minds to ever work in this town. The opening song “Junk” is a big groove song that samples William S. Burroughs. Some of these songs have been published elsewhere, but it's best to just listen to them here. This whole record is very listenable and oddly refreshing. The beautiful drone of “Dreaming” alone is worth the price of admission, but other specific highlights are the title track and the electro-pop style of “Dumbstep.” This collection was released courtesy of Los Angeles label Already Dead Tapes and Records. In other news, Potter is currently on an extensive US tour, which runs through his May 19th date. Find out more about this at readydeadtapes.bandcamp.com.

Incredible String Man: Athens artist Handholder released a demo collection last month as a benefit for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund. I really like the name “Memo.” In fact, these are demo-quality recordings, some of which were recorded directly on a mobile phone with a built-in microphone. Either way, this is a very nice collection of delicate tracks and delicate performances. Old-timers in Athens may also notice similarities between “n2L” and his NuçiPhillips' old project Koncack. The piano-based “Highwayhold” is also really appealing. I don't usually do things like that, but consider this a complete recommendation. Find this at handholder.bandcamp.com.

HERE'S TO NEVER GROWING UP: Athens punk-inspired band Hambear is releasing a four-song live release this month called Live At Market Hugs, recorded at their popular semi-regular Atlanta pop-up market. For example, have you ever wondered if the frontman of the screamo band fronted by Avril Lavigne learned everything he knew from a hypothetical compilation called Now, That's What I Call Third Wave Emo? What about it? If that sounds like you, this is for you. But I want to feel like this project has potential, and I appreciate the drums at the beginning of the first song. Dial left: On Saturday, April 20, Cine will host a screening of the university's radio documentary 35,000 Watts. The film traces the history and impact of college radio stations, and the story is told by the people who were and are on the other side of the microphone. Jennifer Griffith, a former WUOG 90.5 FM staffer, told me that the director interviewed a number of Athens people and former staff members during WUOG's 50th anniversary celebration in 2022. So you can expect to see not only the aforementioned Griffiths, but also staff members Mike Henry, Lee Echols, and Arvel Poe. Athens notables include Michael Rakowski (Pylon), Vanessa Hay (Pylon, Pylon Reenactment Society), Bob Hay (The Scholes), Mike Richmond (Love Tractor), Bertis Downs (REM/Athens) LLC). The film has been described as a love letter to college radio stations. For more information, visit athenscine.com and 35000watts.com.
