Charli XCX admitted she was “jealous” of Lorde's Royals success.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the British singer opened up about being jealous of fellow artists.
“Being jealous is wrongly equated with somehow not supporting women or being less of a girl, and that's not true,” Charli, 31, told the magazine. “I think you can experience jealousy and still be a good person and advocate for other women. Jealousy isn't a very sexy emotion or a sexy trait, right?”
The Speed Drive hitmaker then admitted that Lorde (real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor) was the artist she was most jealous of early in her career.
“When Royals came out, I was so jealous of that song and the success Ella had,” she confessed. “You piece all these things together in your head and go, 'She was into my music. She had big hair, I had big hair. She was black. 'I used to wear black lipstick.' You make these similarities and think, 'Oh, that could be me.' But that couldn't happen because we are completely different people. ”
Charlie said that although the music she and Lorde made was different, she still compared her work to that of the New Zealand singer.
“I wasn't making music like the Royals,” she admitted. “I think I just read it the way I want because I feel insecure about my own work.”
The Von Dutch singer then revealed that she and the 27-year-old “Solar Power” hitmaker are good friends.
“You try to get through it and figure out everything that's unique about you and go after it, and then maybe five months later you'll have a breakdown on something else,” she quipped.
