Bill Belichick's son explains why he stayed with Patriots after his father and brothers left the team

The New England Patriots' regime change wouldn't have happened without Belichick's name in it.

Legendary Patriots head coach Bill Belichick left the team after more than two decades of success, and his son Steve traveled west to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington.

But one Belichick remained: Bryan, who serves as New England's safeties coach under new head coach Jerrod Mayo.

Brian had been with the Patriots since 2017, but when it came time for his father and brother to leave the team, he decided to stay on Mayo's staff, and Mayo, who had worked with Brian long before he was promoted to head coach, agreed to the request.

“I've loved coaching here, living here and working with the players every day,” Bryan said in his first comments since his family's departure, via CBS Sports. “I now have the opportunity to coach in the National Football League. What more could you want?”

Of course, it could be an awkward situation for Bryan to remain in Foxboro, but Mayo said it's quite the opposite.

Former Patriots star 'not surprised' his time with Bill Belichick's team is over: 'We didn't accomplish anything'

“He's been great,” Mayo said. “There are some other guys in the organization that have been a little bit of a drag for him, but they've worked through it. Brian loves football and he loves New England. I think we talked a little bit about this earlier, but the recruit here loves it and he wants to stay here. We're happy to have him here.”

Brian welcomed a baby girl into his family amid the ongoing transition from father to Mayo, forcing him to think about his life, both professionally and personally, with reporters asking if his father had any say or advice throughout this entire situation.

“This is a bit personal, but in some ways it's been good for us to get away from seeing each other at football games every day,” Brian explained of his relationship with his father. “It's not just about football now. It wasn't like it was before, but now that we're not in the same place every day, we're in different places, we talk about other things too. There's a lot of football talk, so when you see each other every day at work, it's been hard not to get caught up in that.”

Brian is pleased with the results Mayo has seen from the change of government.

“I think our team is very well coached. I think it starts with Jerrod. We're all trying to follow his example and live up to the very high expectations that have been built up over the years since my dad was the head coach. … Everybody's trying to live up to that every day.”

Bryan also has a fun safeties group to work with, with former Patriots star Kyle Dugger and Swiss Army knife-like versatile player Jabrill Peppers still in New England.

Meanwhile, Bill is pursuing a different path after not being offered a head coaching job this offseason. He has already begun a new role as a media personality, covering the NFL Draft with ESPN's “Pat McAfee Show” crew and being praised for his draft-day stories. He will also appear on ESPN's “Monday Night Football” replacement broadcast with Peyton Manning and Eli Manning on the Manning Cast.

Bill also made a surprise guest appearance on Netflix's Tom Brady special, and many were pleased to see him nail his relationship with the legendary quarterback they played together in New England.

While it may be a new beginning for the rest of the family, Brian is happy with who he is now.
