Ram Gopal Varma recently shared an incident regarding AR Rahman and Subhash Ghai's clash during the making of the film 'Yuvvraj'. Varma spoke about Rahman's penchant for delaying music distribution, recalling an incident in which Ghai, frustrated with delays, sent Rahman a strongly worded letter demanding the music he had paid hundreds of millions for.
Ram revealed to Film Companion that Subhash Ghai is producing a film called 'Yuvvraj'. 'Yuvvraj' stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Rahman is notorious for being late in delivering music. Ghai got angry about it and at one point told Raman, “How can you delay it, my date is here, Salman's date is here and you are not offering the song.'' He wrote a mean and stinging letter. Rahman complied with him and said, “I'm in London, so come to Bombay on your way to Chennai and meet me at Sukhvinder Singh's studio. We'll work on the song there.''
RGV added that on that day Ghai went to Sukhvinder, Raman was on his way from the airport and Sukhvinder was composing some songs. When Subhash Ghai asks what he is doing, he replies that Rahman called him and he asked him to compose a song. Subhash was very angry. He thought that Rahman was letting someone else do the song because he was putting pressure on him. He thinks that Sukhvinder has told him this by mistake, but Raman comes there and asks Sukhvinder if he has made anything. Only he asked in front of Subhash Ghai. Sukhvinder said yes and let them listen to the song. Raman says he likes it and he asks Subhash Ghai if he likes it.
Guy and Rahman have a long-standing professional relationship. Before 'Yuvvraaj', they had collaborated in several films like 'Taal' (1999) and 'Kisna' (2005). According to RGV, Ghai became visibly enraged during the incident and began shouting at Rahman. He shared that Subhash Ghai had broken this and told Rahman, “I am paying you billions of rupees as a music director and yet you made Sukhvinder compose a song for me.'' “I'm doing it,” he said. Do you have the courage to say that in front of me? If I want Sukhvinder, I will sign him. Who are you to take my money and make Sukhvinder do music? ”
RGV praised Rahman's response to Ghai and said it was amazing. He recounted Rahman's words, “Sir, you are paying for my name, not my music. If I stand by it, it becomes mine. Now you happen to be here, how do you know where I got the tar music from? Do you know what music… maybe my driver, maybe someone else, whatever. I could have done it.”
RGV further revealed a surprising twist in the story. Eventually, Luhrmann sold the song to another filmmaker, who revealed that it turned out to be “Jai Ho” from the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. This revelation, especially considering the film's director Subhash Ghai's earlier statements, suggests that 'Jai Ho' was originally intended for Yuvvraj, but that Ghai felt it was not a good fit for the Salman Khan-starrer film. It added an interesting layer to the story, considering that it was eventually ruled out because of this.
