Pink Floyd's Nick Mason wants to use AI to create new songs for the band.
The 80-year-old drummer believes it's unlikely the surviving members of the group will ever reunite due to the long-running feud between Roger Waters and David Gilmour, who left the band in 1985, but believes an artificial intelligence could write songs as if the bassist had never left.
Nick told the Sunday Mirror: “It'll be interesting to see what AI can do with new music – why not do something like, 'Where did Pink Floyd go after that?'”
“What we need to do is create a situation with AI where David and Roger become friends again, and by the end of it we might have something like ABBA.”
The group last performed together at Live 8 in 2005; original member Syd Barrett had left in 1968 due to mental health issues, and keyboardist Richard Wright had died the following year, two years before succumbing to cancer.
Nick is disappointed that the feud has overshadowed the “Wish You Were Here” hitmakers' good times and many career achievements.
He said: “The majority of our 55-year career has been a lot of fun. We've been in the very privileged position of being part of a successful band, touring the world and hanging out with some really interesting people. It's like a gold card that lets you meet all your favourite athletes and actors.”
The musician still plays early Pink Floyd songs with his current band Saucerful of Secrets and loves playing old songs again.
He said: “The best thing about continuing this is that it's to our benefit. It makes more sense to continue than to stop. Also, the more time goes by, the more upbeat I can look at it, so I enjoy it.”
