Tony Hawk teased some of his favorite bands in a new podcast with Keanu Reeves' band Dogstar.
Appearing on Hawk's podcast, “Hawk vs Wolf,” Reeves and his band also spoke about the iconic “Pro Skater” soundtrack ahead of its 25th anniversary.
The Pro Skater game served as a gateway for younger fans unfamiliar with alternative music, featuring everything from punk to nu metal, and decades after the first installment was released, the game's soundtracks, which changed the careers of groups like Millencolin, Goldfinger, and Fu Manchu, remain beloved by fans and the artists involved alike.
After congratulating Hawk on his next milestone, Reeves asked him what his favorite skate band is. “My favorite band is Gang of Four, and then everything else,” Hawk replied.
Hawke touched on his work on the soundtrack to the seminal film Pro Skater, explaining that it was meant to mimic the scenes he was engrossed in.
“Music was a big part of skating, especially during its formative years in the '70s and '80s,” Hawk said. “So when it came time to do a game, I wanted to represent the culture, including the music, so I named it after bands I listened to growing up. It was easy to get.”
Dogstar drummer Robert Mailhouse asked Hawk if he ever skated without listening to music, to which Hawk replied that music has always been an essential part of the skatepark.
“They mostly played K-Rock. [over the intercom of the skate parks]”K-Rock was that sound. Rodney on ROQ was one of the first records I ever bought,” he explained.
“So that was my contribution to the game in terms of old school music,” he continued.
“At the time, they had their own strong music department to acquire new bands. [the game series]”Things like 'Goldfinger,' 'Power Man 5000,' 'Fu Manchu,' those kinds of films.”
Last month, Dogstar announced a string of U.S. tour dates, including Indianapolis, Richmond, Columbia, Kansas City, Salt Lake City, Jacksonville, Santa Cruz and Las Vegas.
This comes after their surprise return last October with the release of their first album in 23 years, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees.
