Late pop pioneer SOPHIE's final album to be released posthumously – Music News

The final posthumous album from acclaimed experimental pop artist SOPHIE has been completed by the star's collaborators and is set to be released.

The Grammy-nominated producer, whose full name was Sophie Zeon, was found tragically dead at just 34 years old in January 2021 after an accidental fall in Athens.

More than three years after this tragic loss, a self-titled album from the visionary music pioneer who has worked with Madonna and Charli XCX is set for release on September 27th.

Sophie had been working on the album, which follows 2018's Oil of Every Pearl's Inside, with some of her “most treasured” colleagues up until the time of her death, and says it has been “lovingly completed by those closest to her”, including studio manager Benny Long.

A statement from Sophie's family read, “When we, Sophie's family, took the first steps to make this project a reality, we reached out to close friends for whom she had envisioned the album. We wrote, 'We have found solace in the music Sophie left behind, a gift we truly cherish as we try to find a way forward. Sophie will forever be the center of our world.'”

Fans can expect “a cacophony of technique and creative vision that transcends time and genre.”

The article continues, “Sophie rarely spoke publicly about her personal life, preferring to channel everything she wanted to express through her music. It seems only fitting that she would share with the world the music she wished to release, so that we can all connect with her in this form she loved most.”

“This album has always told the story of Sophie's musical journey: a cacophony of technique and creative vision that transcends time and genre. Her unique sonic world operates on an emotional level, encouraging listeners to intuitively embrace an ever-shifting landscape of light and dark, soft and hard, arriving at self-love and joyful self-acceptance. Highlighting the contradictions of sound and material, Sophie's work goes beyond pure hearing to create dimensions she only dreamed of.

“Now it takes on a different, emotive meaning, telling the story of a life from the mysterious unknown to the wild clubs to the euphoric formlessness.

“Sophie gave everything to music. She's always here.”

The first track out now is “Reason Why” featuring Kim Petras and BC Kingdom.
