Johnny Borrell says he feared the band risked becoming “a tribute act to themselves” if they didn't “break up” – Music News

Appearing on The Chris Moyles Show this morning, Razorlight's Johnny Borrell and Andy Burrows spoke about their eagerly anticipated new album, Planet Nowhere, and revealed that they are on the verge of “breaking up” as a band. Johnny admitted that the band will never make music together again and are in danger of becoming “their own” tribute band.

CM: “How is it being back in the studio? How is the Gap you guys different from the Razorlight we know?”

JB: Well, this single that's coming out today and this album is the first time we've all done something together since 2008 or 2009.

CM: “That's amazing.”

JB: “And I never thought I'd do it again.”

CM: “Johnny, no one thought you'd do it again.”

JB: “No. We had to get back together and do this greatest hits album. I had contractual obligations and I really didn't want to do that. So I said to the guys, 'Let's go to Spain and record it with Youth.'

Youth seemed to have a very simple view of the band, and I was like, “Let's see if we can make something good.” So we went there, and it was like a movie. On the last day, we felt like we found something. But before we left, I told the guys, “If we don't find something, if we don't do what we really love and want to do, then we'll have to give up as we move forward as a band and make new music.”

“Because you can't do your own tribute act to be mean. So that's what we did. So we went out and it happened. It was like a movie. So all I can say is this record was definitely meant to happen, and I feel like… I don't know, I'm just so happy to be here and do this with Andy, and I think this is an album that any Razorlight fan will enjoy.”
