'The View' co-host calls for gun control after assassination attempt on Trump
The co-host of “The View” called for gun control Monday during a discussion of the assassination attempt on former President Trump.
“I know people always say it's too early to talk about guns, that a father of two has been tragically killed and we should all be praying, but I'm not. It's time to talk about the intersection of this assassination attempt, which is America's fascination and obsession with gun ownership,” said liberal co-host Sunny Hostin, who also condemned political violence.
Trump was shot in the ear in an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday, killing one rally-goer, Corey Comperatore, 50, and critically wounding two others. The shocking attack is being investigated as an assassination attempt and an act of domestic terrorism, and the gunman's exact motive remains unclear.
Hostin, a fierce anti-Trump voice in the media, said she worried the assassination attempt on Trump would spark an argument about the need for more “good guys with guns.”
“I fear this incident will lead to more gun ownership in this country, not less. I think we need to have an honest and serious discussion about real gun control laws,” Hostin added.
Ana Navarro, another staunch anti-Trump host, also called for action, invoking the race of the killer.
“I hope that one day in this country we have a chance to have a conversation about what's going on, because we can't just react to an incident that happened on our side. What was this about? A 20-year-old lone wolf, a white weirdo with easy access to a gun. We need to talk about this, because it wasn't a drag queen or an immigrant or an angry liberal woman. And these incidents continue. We need to respond, not as left or right, Republican or Democrat, but as Americans. We need to respond as Americans and we need to demand better,” Navarro said.
Co-host Joy Behar's commentary focused on the suspect, Thomas Matthew Brooks, who was shot and killed by the Secret Service shortly after the shooting, and she questioned why no one reported that a 20-year-old “white man” had purchased 50 rounds of ammunition before the ambush.
