Biden repeated “anyway” at least nine times as he trailed off during the news conference.

President Biden held a key press conference Thursday night where he doubled down on his earlier pledge to stay in the race, but also made several gaffes, including cutting himself off and using the word “anyway” at least nine times.

“I've got to pace myself a lot more. The next debate, I'm not going to be traveling 15 time zones a week before. That was the goal anyway,” Biden said after being asked by reporters about reports that he would need to go to bed earlier that day.

“That's what it is. And by the way, nevertheless, I love my staff. But they add stuff. They always add stuff. … I get a big scolding from my wife for that. Anyway,” he continued.

According to a transcript of the press conference, Biden said “Anyway” at least nine times during the roughly 58-minute press conference, sparking jokes on social media about the “Anyway drinking game.”

Fox News' “Jesse Watters Primetime” aired edited versions of Biden's repeated use of “anyway,” including six of the nine times in the transcript of the press conference.

Biden's press conference came amid growing concern that he may not be mentally capable of remaining in the Oval Office for another four years, with 17 Democratic lawmakers calling for him to drop out of the presidential race as he prepares to face former President Trump in November.

“Joe Biden's record in public office is unmatched,” Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, wrote to X after the press conference. “His accomplishments are immeasurable. His legacy as a great president is assured.”

“He must not risk his legacy, his record, and American democracy to confront the horrors Donald Trump promises.”

Conservatives took to social media to criticize Biden throughout the event for a number of gaffes, including holding up a list of reporters he was scheduled to call, appearing to confuse Vice President Kamala Harris with former President Trump and repeatedly saying “anyway.”

“This NATO press conference with Biden is another disaster. It is baffling that those advising this man continue to think he will not embarrass himself and this country. Why do they continue to allow this to happen?” Fox News contributor Tammy Bruce posted on X during the press conference.

But the president's allies deemed the press conference a success, commenting on social media that Biden was “strong” in the way he answered reporters' questions.

Biden held an hour-long press conference where he answered multiple questions in an attempt to ease concerns about a mental breakdown.

“Frankly, this is a very powerful performance. @POTUS delivered a master class in how foreign and domestic policy intersect, and explained how important U.S. global leadership is to people at home. Well done, Mr. President,” Democratic strategist Joel Rubin posted on X.

“Tonight Joe Biden spoke at length and in detail about the major national security issues he's addressing, while also calmly but forcefully defending his views on the state of this campaign. 50 minutes of Q&A. He needed to make a big impact tonight, and he did,” former White House communications director Kate Bedingfield posted on X.

The president again addressed concerns about his mental capacity at his press conference and staunchly defended his record in office.

President Biden says European allies 'must win' in November

“Am I getting the job done? Can you name someone who has passed more significant legislation in three and a half years and created 2,000 jobs just last week? So if I slow down, I'm not getting the job done. That's a sign that I shouldn't be doing the job. But there's no sign of that yet… none at all,” he said.

Biden also weighed in on whether Harris could become president, elaborating that he would not have chosen her as his running mate in the 2020 presidential election if he didn't think she could.

“First of all, how she's handled the issue of women's bodily freedom and her ability to control her body. Secondly, her ability to handle almost every issue in committee. She's been a fantastic prosecutor. She's a first-class person and she's been really good in the Senate. I wouldn't have picked her if I didn't think she was qualified to be president. From the beginning. I've never made any secret about that. She is qualified to be president. That's why I picked her,” he said.

Biden was addressing media this week to leaders attending a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the NATO defense military alliance.

Katy Perry returns with “Woman's World” music video

The single will appear on the singer's upcoming “celebratory dance-pop” album, “143,” due for release in September.

“Woman's World,” the lead single from 143 , which drops on September 20, offers a glimpse into Perry's first album in four years. “I set out to create a bold, vibrant and celebratory dance-pop album with the number 143 as a central message of love,” she said in a statement about the album.

Last month, Rolling Stone reported that Perry had enlisted former Teenage Dream collaborators Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Stargate for her new album, along with several others with whom she hadn't worked closely before.

“Katie knows exactly what kind of album she wants to make and has assembled a team to help her get it done,” a Capitol Records source told Rolling Stone, “which includes past collaborators like Luke, Stargate, Max Martin and Sarah Hudson, as well as big new names like Vaughn Oliver, Rocco Valdes and Theron Thomas.”

Pop superstar Perry made her music comeback on Thursday (July 11) by premiering the music video for her new song, “Woman's World.” In the clip, Perry takes on a construction site as the ultimate pin-up girl, only to end up running into an anvil. She then emerges in a female-led post-apocalyptic world where she gets into some fun mayhem with her female pals. Influencer Trisha Paytas also makes a cameo in the clip.

“We better celebrate/'Cause baby we ain't going away/It's a woman's world and we're lucky to live in it,” she sings on the anthemic chorus.

The song is Perry's first official release since her 2020 album, Smile, which was produced by Dr. Luke, Vaughn Oliver, Aaron Joseph and Rocco Did It Again! and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. “Woman's World” is the lead track off Perry's highly anticipated dance-pop album, 143, which is code for “I love you.” According to Dictionary.com, the use of the word dates back to the early 1900s. The project will be released on September 20th.

“I set out to create a bold, vibrant and celebratory dance-pop album with 143 as the central message of love,” Perry said in a statement. According to the release, “Woman's World” will rival many of the songs on 143 and is “a sexy, fearless return for the multi-talented musician.”

AI music company hires law firm to fight label lawsuit

According to court documents, AI music companies Suno and Udio have hired top law firm Latham & Watkins to defend against a lawsuit filed in late June by the three major record labels.

The lawsuit, filed by plaintiffs Sony Music, Warner Music Group (WMG) and Universal Music Group (UMG), alleges that Snow and Udio illegally copied the labels' recordings and trained AI models to produce music that “saturates the market with machine-generated content, which directly competes with, devalues ​​and potentially drowns out authentic recordings.” [the services were] was built.

Latham & Watkins has already played a key role in defending some of the top companies in the artificial intelligence field, including the firm's work defending Anthropic against copyright infringement claims brought by UMG, Concord Music Group and ABKCO last October. Latham has also represented OpenAI in all lawsuits brought by authors and other rights holders, including a lawsuit brought by The New York Times and a lawsuit brought by comedian Sarah Silverman and other authors.

The Latham team is led by Andrew Gass, Steve Feldman, Sy Damle, Britt Lovejoy and Nate Taylor. Plaintiffs UMG, WMG and Sony Music are represented by Mose Kaba, Mariah Rivera, Alexander Perry and Robert Krieger of Houston Hennigan, and Daniel Cloherty of Cloherty & Steinberg.

AI companies typically argue that their training is protected by copyright's fair use doctrine, an important rule that allows protected works to be reused without violating the law, and that's likely to be a core part of Latham's defense of Suno and Udio's practices. While fair use has historically allowed things like news reporting and parody, AI companies argue that it applies just as much when building machines that use millions of works “in-between” to produce entirely new works.

So far, Suno and Udio have declined to comment on whether they used unauthorized copyrights in their datasets. But the music industry began questioning the contents of the datasets after a series of articles written by Ed Newton-Rex, founder of AI music safety nonprofit Fairly Trained, was published in Music Business Worldwide. In one of the articles, Newton-Rex said that he was able to generate music from both Suno and Udio that was “strikingly similar to copyrighted music.”

The lawsuit cites circumstantial evidence to support the labels' belief that Suno and Udio used their own copyrighted material to train the AI, including output generated by Suno and Udio that sounds like the voices of Bruce Springsteen, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Michael Jackson and ABBA, impersonating producers Cash Money AP and Jason Derulo, and output that sounds nearly identical to Mariah Carey's “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” The Beach Boys' “I Get Around,” ABBA's “Dancing Queen,” The Temptations' “My Girl,” and Green Day's “American Idiot.”

Jon Bon Jovi paid tribute to his mother, Carole Bongiovi, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83.

On Wednesday, Bon Jovi shared a clip from the music video for “Story of Love” on Instagram, which showed the musician playing guitar alongside photos of his family and home videos. “Mommy we take you with us. Always,” he captioned the post.

“Story of Love,” featured on Bon Jovi's album of the same name, 2020, is about the musician's love for his family. “I sat down to write a song for my kids, and I realized I was writing about my whole family, my kids, my wife, my parents,” he said in a press statement at the time.

The lyrics read, “Fathers love their daughters like mothers love their sons / They've been writing our stories since before there were stories / From the day you arrived, 'til you walk, 'til you run / Nothing but pride, nothing but love.”

Bongiovi died on Tuesday at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey. He was 83. “Our mother was a force to be reckoned with. Her spirit and positive attitude shaped this family,” Bongiovi wrote in a statement released to various media outlets.

In the recent Hulu documentary series, Thank You, Goodnight – The Bon Jovi Story, Bon Jovi detailed how his mother set him on a musical career.

“My mom was a florist and had a little gift shop at one point, and somehow she brought home an acoustic guitar and a Roy Clark homeschooling book and some records,” he recalls. “I was about 7 or 8 years old and had no desire to play guitar. I remember throwing it down the basement stairs and breaking the tuning pick. But then when I got to about 12 or 13 and I was hearing pop songs on AM radio, I liked them and started singing a little bit. That's when I found my own voice in music.”

The CW to live stream K-pop music festival KCON LA 2024

The CW will broadcast K-pop music festival KCON LA 2024 live on Sunday, July 28 at 8 PM ET/PT.

KCON is a three-day festival celebrating K-Pop, with a variety of fan activities and live performances throughout the day, culminating in a massive three-night concert produced by CJ ENM. The festival will take place from July 26-28 at the LA Convention Center, Gilbert Lindsay Plaza, and Crypto.com Arena.

“We are thrilled to partner with The CW to broadcast KCON LA 2024's exciting M Countdown live on primetime television nationwide,” said Harry H.K. Shin, head of music entertainment at CJ ENM. “This historic broadcast is a testament to the incredible community of K-pop fans that have made these groups a global sensation.”

KCON began as a one-day event in Irvine in 2012 and has evolved into a global platform celebrating K-pop and Korean culture. The event series has also been held in Hong Kong, Japan and is set to return to Germany for the first time on September 28th and 29th.

The hosts for M Countdown will be Rowoon (Friday, July 26th), Jeon Somi (Saturday, July 27th) and Kim Soo Hyun (Sunday, July 28th).

The lineup for M Countdown on Sunday, July 28, includes I-Land 2, Jeon Somi, NCT 127, Stayc, Zerobaseone, and Zico.

Other artists performing throughout the festival weekend include Bibi, Boynextdoor, Ini, Kep1er, P1Harmony, Taemin, Jo Yuri, NMixx, TWS, Drippin, Apoki, Dxmon, Pow, Craxy and many more.

Former President Barack Obama is keeping quiet following reports that he is working “behind the scenes” to remove President Biden from the 2024 presidential race.

Multiple media outlets reported on Obama's alleged efforts Thursday morning, including Politico, which reported that actor George Clooney had given former President Obama a “warning” over a New York Times guest op-ed calling on Biden to back down.

“President Obama did not encourage or advise Mr. Clooney to speak, but he did not oppose it either,” the report said.

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough went a step further, saying on Biden's favorite show, “Morning Joe,” that “what's going on behind the scenes is the Biden campaign, and many Democrats believe that Barack Obama is working quietly behind the scenes to orchestrate this.”

A source close to Obama declined to comment on the report but told Fox News Digital that the former president spoke in support of Biden both at the Los Angeles fundraiser that was the subject of Clooney's op-ed and during his disappointing performance in the first presidential debate last month.

Since then, Obama has maintained public silence while many of his closest aides and former staffers, including Clooney, former national security adviser David Axelrod and the “Obama Brothers,” a trio of top aides often referred to during Obama's White House tenure, have stepped up their calls for the president to step down.

In his op-ed, Clooney said Democratic leaders needed to stop trying to convince Americans “that they didn't see what we just saw” and accused them of ignoring “warning signs” about Biden.

He cited his attendance at a fundraiser in June, where the Biden who showed up was “not the 'Big' Joe Biden of 2010. Not even the Joe Biden of 2020. The same guy we all saw at the debates.”

Jon Favreau, a former adviser and member of the “Obama Brothers,” said during a CNN appearance on Wednesday that he attended the same fundraiser as Clooney and saw the same things as him.

“It wasn't a surprise to us at the fundraiser. I was there. Clooney was right and everyone I spoke to at the fundraiser was thinking the same thing, except for the people who work for Joe Biden. At least they didn't say that,” he said.

“I remember after the fundraiser, my wife Emily asked me, 'What are you going to do?' and I said, 'Well, the debate is in a week. If he does well in the debate, people will think he was just tired because he flew back from Europe and that's the end of it. Or he'll look like this at the debate and the whole country will be talking about it. So this is what we're doing.'”

Biden has said he has no plans to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, and his campaign remains “full steam ahead,” a source told Fox News Digital on Tuesday.

Downtown Music Holdings' board considers sale

The board of directors of Downtown Music Holdings, parent company of independent distributors CD Baby and FUGA as well as a number of other publishing and rights management businesses, is considering a sale, a source familiar with the deal told Billboard.

Downtown, which publishes and manages the catalogs of John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Miles Davis, Wu-Tang Clan and many other artists, is in talks with private equity firms and at least one major music company as the family of the late Douglas Myers, a longtime backer of the company, is looking to pull out of its investment, according to two sources who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

The music industry's burgeoning independent sector has seen a flurry of deal activity over the past year as both outside investors and traditional music companies seek ways to gain more control over the market for serving and distributing music from DIY artists, songwriters and indie labels.

In June, a consortium consisting of Denis Ladegayery, EQT and TCV acquired 95% of the outstanding shares of French music company Believe after Warner Music Group withdrew from a takeover bid it had made earlier this year. Later that month, Chicago-based private equity firm Flexpoint Ford acquired Create Music Group for $165 million. Last year, Apple veteran Larry Jackson raised roughly $1 billion to buy distributor Vidia as a driving force behind launching his new company, Gamma, while Excellation Music acquired indie distributor RedEye for an undisclosed sum.

“Market interest and excitement for our platform is growing at an all-time high. We remain focused on serving our customers and growing our business as we continue to drive innovation across the global music industry,” Downtown said in an emailed statement, declining to comment on a potential sale.

The market share of recorded music revenue generated by labels and artists who release music outside the major label system has been growing globally for nearly a decade. According to MIDiA research, the combined share of the recorded music revenue market generated by non-major labels and self-releasing artists will increase from 28.6% in 2015 to 36.7% by 2023.

Downtown was founded in 2007 by Justin Kalifowitz as a publishing house in New York and has rapidly grown into a global company with more than 20 offices around the world. Its scale makes it one of the most attractive acquisition targets in this segment of the music industry. Downtown reaches more than 4 million creators and serves approximately 50 million songs from 5,000 enterprise clients.

Downtown has previously explored a sale, in the process selling its 145,000-song publishing catalog to Concord for roughly $400 million in 2021. In recent years, Downtown has transformed itself from a major indie publisher into a full-stack music company.

The company has made more than 10 acquisitions in recent years, including creator-direct distributor CD Baby, business-to-business technology and distribution platform FUGA, rights management company AdRev, and service providers DashGo, Soundrop, Simbals, Found.ee, Curve and Sheer Music Publishing.

Downtown operates through four divisions — artist and label services, including CD Baby; distribution services, including FUGA; publishing services, including management company Songtrust; and royalty and financial services, including Curve — and is expected to generate about $130 million in net revenue, about $40 million in EBITDA and $900 million in total revenue, according to three sources familiar with the company's financials.

Sources said Downtown uses an agency accounting model to record its finances, with only fees from companies like FUGA counted as overall company revenue.

Sir Douglas Myers was a New Zealand businessman and the long-time chief executive of beverage company Lion Nathan before selling his stake in the company to Japanese brewer Kirin in 1998. Myers, who died in 2017, reportedly invested in Downtown because of his son Campbell Myers' love of music. Campbell Myers served as Downtown's director of business development for a year from 2009 to 2010, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Billboard was unable to identify which companies were in talks with Downtown, but Warner Music Group CEO Robert Kincl told investors in May that the company was exploring mergers and acquisitions that could expand its “low-touch” services for independent creators and labels, and in June the company hired Michael Ryan Southern, global head of music and live entertainment investment banking at Goldman Sachs, as its head of M&A.

“We have clear plans to develop this area of ​​our ecosystem and are building solutions internally while remaining vigilant for M&A opportunities that could accelerate our capabilities,” Kincl said during WMG's quarterly earnings call on May 9.
