With her breakout solo single debuting at No. 1 on the global charts, Lisa will join other artists already announced as headliners for the all-star Central Park concert, including Post Malone, Doja Cat and Jelly Roll.
Blackpink's Lisa's solo career, long widely expected to be a success outside the group, is set to gain greater attention in the U.S. when she performs as the fifth official headliner at the Global Citizen Festival, an annual charity concert event held in Central Park in September.
Festival organizers are touting this as Lisa's first solo performance at a music festival, but that's just one of the reasons it's so unusual so far: She's only made a handful of solo appearances to date, the most recent of which was a three-song performance in Paris in January. With no touring plans announced yet, her appearance will ensure that this performance will be streamed around the world.
Lisa's announcement on Tuesday morning solved the mystery of why a fifth headliner slot was left publicly open when Global Citizen announced its original four headliners (Post Malone, Doja Cat, Jelly Roll and Rau Alejandro).
The concert, hosted by Hugh Jackman, will take place on September 28th. Tickets are free but can be earned by taking “actions” that advance Global Citizen's goals, which include “ending poverty, protecting the planet and demanding equality for marginalized communities.” Tickets can be purchased through the organization's app or at globalcitizenfestival.com.
“We're so excited to join forces with Lisa for her first solo performance at a music festival,” said Katie Hill, Global Citizen's SVP and Head of Music, Entertainment and Artist Relations, in a statement. “Not only is Lisa an incredible performer, she's also a powerful advocate, using her voice and platform to drive action on some of the most urgent challenges facing the world. We look forward to welcoming Lisa, and of course Lily's and Brinks, to Central Park in September.” Hill went on to urge fans to “take action on the Global Citizen app and join us. Together, we can make a huge impact to end extreme poverty.”
Lisa, the Thai rapper, singer and dancer who is quickly becoming popular among Korean girl group fans, is enjoying a good week following the successful international launch of her first single, “Rockstar,” released in partnership with RCA Records and her management company, Lloud Co.
Billboard announced on Monday that “Rockstar” debuted at No. 1 on the global chart excluding the U.S. She became the third member of Blackpink to reach No. 1 on that chart. On Billboard's Global 200, which measures success in the U.S. and the rest of the world, “Rockstar” finished at No. 4.
In the seven days following its June 28 release, “Rockstar” garnered 94.2 million streams in territories contributing to the global charts, excluding the U.S., according to Billboard.
Global Citizen has yet to announce streaming details for music fans who want to tune in in September, but the organization previously named iHeartMedia as the concert's exclusive U.S. audio partner. Live Nation is the production partner, and Dan & Dusted and Diversified Production Services are producing the event.
