Bill Maher and Gutfeld clash over Trump on Fox News: 'We agree on some things' but not 'the most important thing'

“Gutfeld!” host Greg Gutfeld and “Real Time” host Bill Maher weighed in on Trump, especially over whether to concede in the next election if the prospective Republican nominee loses. They had a combative exchange about the president.

Maher agreed with Gutfeld's opening monologue assertions Monday about the importance of conversations with people across the aisle, saying he and Gutfeld “agreed on some points. However, he noted that there was “complete disagreement on the most important points.”

“Trump is someone who won't concede the election, and that's the most important thing,” Maher said on “Gutfeld!” on Fox News. “You don't seem to see it that way. That's the most important thing going on in this country. He didn't concede in the last election, and he's not going to concede in this election.”

“You don't know that!” Gutfeld interjected. “You can't see the future, Bill.”

“Yeah, I did,” Maher retorted, “because I was the only one talking about it at the time, and people were like, 'Oh, you smoke too much pot.' It turns out I smoked just the right amount.”

Maher was referring to his frank prediction that then-President Trump would refuse to voluntarily leave office, long before Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 election.

“Can you really imagine this guy saying, 'Okay, I lost. That's it,'” Maher asked.

“That's right, he's gone!” Gutfeld replied.

“He left because he had to go,” Maher said, emphasizing his words.

“Yes, but that's how it works,” Gutfeld said. “Do you think he's going to get into the White House and play Straw Dogs with Dustin Hoffman?”

“Well, last time he thought other Republicans would support him,” Maher replied. “When he calls people in Georgia and says he needs 11,000 votes, he wants them to find –“

“He said, 'Find,' but he didn't say, 'Create,'” Gutfeld emphasized.

“Well, it's the same thing,” Maher pushed back, to which Gutfeld replied, “No, it's not.”

Mr. Maher, who has published a new book, “What This Comedian Said Will Shock You,'' later told Mr. Gutfeld that he was “concerned” that Mr. Trump was likely to win the 2024 election. The reason is that Trump is an insurrectionist who doesn't believe in democracy. He is also insane and a criminal.

But after Mr. Gutfeld showed footage of Mr. Trump joking with a crowd at a recent campaign event, the liberal comedian conceded about Mr. Trump's youth compared to President Biden.

“But when you use the clip you just showed, you have to say what works for him. I mean, look, he's about the same age as Biden. But Biden is portrayed as an old man. “It doesn't look old.'' Mr. Maher said. “He's like [the rock band] kiss. Put on a wig and paint your face and you'll be transported back to 1976. ”

The HBO host concluded his comments by saying that he and Gutfeld “cannot pretend that our differences aren't serious,” but that “we can also be friends.”

“I can't hate you. I've said it a billion times. You can hate Trump, but you can't hate everyone who likes him. That's half the country,” Maher said. “I'm certainly not blind to Donald Trump's flaws. I understand why people vote for him. Look, a conservative person once told me, 'What you liberals don't understand about Trump is that you don't get it.' We don't like it either. We just see him as a bulwark against left-wing nonsense. There's a lot of nonsense on the left, and it's in my book, so I get it.”
