Liberals on social media were outraged after Democratic lawmakers reportedly acknowledged behind the scenes that former President Trump was not a “threat to democracy” as the party loudly claims.
New York Times columnist Ezra Klein appeared on The Bulwark podcast on Tuesday and revealed that “senior Democratic Party officials” have privately told him they are panicking over whether to support or abandon President Biden.
“People are weighing all these things: 'It would be very unpleasant for me personally to oppose the president as a Democratic elected official,' and then they weigh what it would be like if Donald Trump won, and then they say, obviously in favor, 'I could live with it if Donald Trump wins,'” Klein said. “To be fair, I've heard people say that privately.”
“Really?” podcast host Tim Miller responded.
“I had a top Democrat basically say to me, 'I don't know why Democrats who believe that Donald Trump is an existential threat to democracy are acting the way they do, but I'm acting the way I do because I don't believe that,'” Klein continued.
“Who the hell is this?” yelled an angry Miller. “Tell us your source, Ezra!”
“I think it's infuriating, but I think it's consistent,” Klein replied.
Klein later told Miller, “I think at some point you have to say, no matter what Democrats say in public, they're more resigned than their public rhetoric suggests and they're going to throw themselves into resistance to President Trump.”
“Your voice is so calm, but right now my blood pressure is skyrocketing,” Miller said. “Ezra, I'm really angry.”
