Mel B will receive an honorary doctorate for her recent charity work on domestic violence.
The former Spice Girls member will receive a doctorate from Leeds Beckett University at a ceremony in August, it was announced on Monday.
In recent years, Mel, whose real name is Melanie Brown, has campaigned against domestic violence and worked with charities such as Women's Aid, of which she is a patron.
The Spice World star split from ex-husband Stephen Belafonte after 10 years in 2018. Shortly after the split, Mel claimed that the film producer had been mentally and physically abusive throughout their relationship.
Stephen's legal team calls the allegations “outrageous and without merit”.
In a new statement, Mel, 49, revealed that he was studying at Leeds Beckett University and had completed a course in trauma-informed care.
“Ever since my divorce, I've told my friends and family that I wanted to go to college, but I don't think anyone took me seriously,” she said. “But this has given me the opportunity to actually go to college.”
Originally from Leeds, she continued: “I am proud to be part of this university in my hometown, proud to be here as Melanie Brown, proud to have studied alongside the other students and received such fantastic guidance from the teaching staff.”
The Wannabe singer spoke about leaving her marriage and living with her mother during an interview with the BBC in March.
“Not only was I mentally and physically abused, but I was also financially abused,” she told the outlet. “I didn't realize I didn't have as much money as I thought I did, so I literally had no choice but to live humbly and to live with my mom.”
