Megan Thee Stallion has won a ruling to dismiss a copyright lawsuit over her hit song “Savage.”
Last year, the popular rapper was accused of plagiarizing a little-known 1999 song for the song.
The lawsuit, filed last year by producer James A. Green, claimed Stallion's smash hit infringed on the copyright of his 2020 song, “It's About To Be On.”
As reported by Billboard, he claimed that Savage's producer J White Did It had access to his earlier tracks through his manager.
However, Judge Catherine Polk Failla ruled there was insufficient evidence to prove the allegations and dismissed the case, finding no evidence that the superstar had even listened to the instrumental track.
She said there was no evidence that Megan or Warner had access to Green's song, it wasn't widely distributed, and there were no substantial similarities between the instrumentation, drum patterns or vocals of the two songs.
“Savage” was first released in March 2020 as part of Stallion's EP “Suga.” The song went viral on TikTok, with people performing the “Savage” dance challenge during the song's chorus.
The remix featuring Beyoncé was released in April 2020 and was included on Megan's debut album, Good News, that same year.
“Savage Remix” reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 on May 26, 2020, becoming Megan Thee Stallion's first number one hit and BeyoncĂ©'s seventh.
