Normani has opened up about her difficult times in Fifth Harmony and explained why she had to “suppress” memories of those times.
The 28-year-old singer formed Fifth Harmony alongside Ally Brooke, Camila Cabello, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui when she was a contestant on season two of the US version of The X Factor in 2012.
But her time with the band was far from harmonious, with Normani becoming the target of racist trolls and abuse from fans and music industry executives alike.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Motivation singer explained that he's been wiping some of his memories from his time in the group, which disbanded in 2018.
She said: “There's a lot of things I don't remember because I kept it suppressed – it's my way of protecting myself from having to deal with everything. But I do remember that it wasn't all bad. There were struggles for sure, but what we accomplished together was really amazing.”
The star released her debut solo album, “Dopamine,” this month and says she has no plans to hold back now that she's getting attention.
She told the music magazine: “I'm so strong, despite everything I've endured. It's a testament to my strength, resilience and discipline.”
“I feel a lot more confident and at ease now. I've done really well in terms of reclaiming myself and recognizing that beauty. I trust myself a lot more.”
