PGA Tour player Grayson Murray (30) dies after withdrawing from tournament

PGA golfer Grayson Murray died Saturday at age 30, shortly after withdrawing midway through this weekend's tournament.

Murray withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge after playing 16 holes due to “illness,” according to the tour. He shot a 2-under 68 on Thursday.

“We are heartbroken and heartbroken to share that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. Words are running out,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement.

“The PGA Tour is a family, and when we lose a member of our family, it's never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Monahan added that he had contacted Murray's parents to offer his condolences and that grief counsellors had also been provided on the tour.

“They asked him to continue playing tournaments,” Monahan said of Murray's parents. “They were adamant that this is what Grayson wanted, and although it is difficult, we want to respect their wishes.”

Murray, ranked 58th in the world, withdrew after bogeying the final three holes.

He has two career wins on tour, including a playoff victory over Keegan Bradley and Byung-hun Ahn at this year's Sony Open in Hawaii, the first of which came at the 2017 Barbasol Championship.

Murray has previously battled depression and anxiety and received treatment for alcoholism, and said in January he had been sober for several months, according to NBC Sports.

The cause of death has not been made public.
